UN SDG Action Programs

UN SDG Action Programs

National Civil Society (NCS) integrates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across all areas of its work, turning a global vision into grounded, local impact. From disaster resilience and digital inclusion to health, education, and environmental protection, NCS designs programs that reflect the interconnected nature of sustainable development.

Rather than treating the SDGs as separate targets, NCS approaches them as a unified framework for social responsibility and national transformation. Its initiatives are structured to respond to real-life challenges faced by individuals and families; especially in underserved and middle-income communities often overlooked by conventional welfare systems. Every project is mapped to relevant SDG themes, ensuring that outcomes contribute meaningfully to global benchmarks.

With a strong emphasis on equity, access, and accountability, NCS builds partnerships with government institutions, corporate stakeholders, educational bodies, and grassroots organizations. This collaborative model enables resources to be used effectively, scaled strategically, and measured transparently.

Whether reviving natural resources, promoting financial protection, or advancing community education, each NCS intervention is grounded in the belief that sustainable development must be people-centered, practical, and inclusive. By embedding the SDGs into the design, delivery, and evaluation of its programs, NCS ensures its work is not only relevant today; but also essential for tomorrow.

Through its SDG Action Programs, NCS is helping shape a future where dignity, justice, environmental balance, and human well-being are not aspirational goals, but accessible realities for all.

1. No Poverty

NCS provides practical safety nets such as free legal aid, marriage assistance, and insurance support to economically struggling families. Its membership model ensures basic financial protection, allowing vulnerable households to recover from emergencies without falling deeper into poverty.

2. Zero Hunger

During disaster relief and community support drives, NCS distributes food kits and essentials to affected families. By partnering with local bodies and ensuring immediate food access during crises, NCS helps reduce hunger and improve food security in vulnerable regions.

3. Good Health and Well-Being

Through partnerships with PharmEasy and Apollo Health, NCS ensures members access affordable medicines, diagnostics, surgeries, and preventive care. Health insurance, critical illness coverage, and teleconsultations promote timely treatment and reduce healthcare-related financial stress across low- and middle-income communities.

4. Quality Education

NCS publishes UN-endorsed SDG learning materials for students and youth. These resources promote values like peace, sustainability, equality, and responsible citizenship, reaching thousands of schools and community groups across India and building awareness from a young age.

5. Gender Equality

NCS supports women through marriage assistance programs, health benefits, and access to insurance protection. By offering equal service access to female members and encouraging women’s participation in training and volunteerism, NCS strengthens gender equity in communities.

6. Clean Water and Sanitation

NCS undertakes water body restoration projects that revive lakes, ponds, and wetlands. These efforts help recharge groundwater, reduce urban flooding, and promote clean water availability, particularly in underserved and drought-prone regions across India.

7. Affordable and Clean Energy

NCS promotes solar energy adoption, EV charging infrastructure, and energy literacy campaigns. These efforts reduce reliance on fossil fuels and bring clean, cost-effective energy solutions to communities, contributing to India’s climate and sustainability goals.

8. Decent Work and Economic Growth

By offering training, digital tools, and service franchises under its GST Suvidha Kendras, NCS creates livelihood opportunities. These centers provide employment while delivering public services, empowering citizens with both skills and income generation pathways.

9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

NCS builds digital infrastructure at the grassroots through local service centers. These facilities enable access to e-governance tools, financial services, and entrepreneurship support; bridging the urban-rural divide with innovative and sustainable models.

10. Reduced Inequalities

NCS targets families often excluded from welfare; middle-class, low-income, and self-employed citizens. Its services are priced affordably and made accessible in underserved regions, helping reduce systemic inequalities in health, access, and social protection.

11. Sustainable Cities and Communities

NCS implements urban forestry, clean energy zones, and disaster preparedness programs in partnership with municipalities and local residents. These efforts build safer, greener, and more climate-resilient urban environments that promote well-being and long-term sustainability.

12. Responsible Consumption and Production

NCS promotes environmental awareness and responsible use of resources through its SDG literacy campaigns and waste management initiatives. Community education programs encourage recycling, local sourcing, and reduced plastic use in daily life.

13. Climate Action

Through afforestation, clean energy promotion, and disaster readiness training, NCS takes a direct role in building community resilience to climate change. Its work empowers citizens to adapt to and mitigate environmental challenges effectively.

14. Life Below Water

NCS’s water body restoration indirectly supports aquatic life by improving water quality and reducing pollution runoff. Community education discourages dumping in rivers and lakes, protecting aquatic ecosystems and restoring biodiversity.

15. Life on Land

NCS creates biodiversity-friendly green zones and Miyawaki forests in cities. These efforts restore tree cover, support pollinators, and create microhabitats, contributing to ecosystem recovery and improved urban biodiversity.

16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

NCS works with IPYG to promote peace education and civic participation. It also offers free legal support, encouraging access to justice and empowering citizens to resolve disputes peacefully through structured community engagement.

17. Partnerships for the Goals

NCS collaborates with UN agencies, NDRF, IPYG, educational institutions, corporates, and local governments. These partnerships enable shared resources, cross-sector solutions, and scalable impact aligned with the global SDG framework.

Driving Local Impact Through Global Goals

By aligning its mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, National Civil Society (NCS) builds a development model that is inclusive, forward-thinking, and deeply responsive to the needs of everyday citizens. Its programs do not treat sustainability as a distant ideal but as a daily practice; woven into education, health, livelihoods, and environmental care. Through structured partnerships, transparent implementation, and measurable results, NCS ensures that the SDGs are not just promoted but lived. Every step taken is a step toward a more equitable, secure, and resilient society. As India progresses, NCS remains committed to ensuring no one is left behind in the journey toward sustainable and meaningful change.

Urban Forestry

In partnership with We Grow Forest Foundation, NCS leads impactful urban forestry initiatives to address rising pollution, heat, and ecological imbalance in cities. These efforts include the creation of Miyawaki forests, green corridors, and biodiversity-friendly plantations in schools, hospitals, residential areas, and urban commons. The initiative not only restores green cover but also enhances public awareness about environmental responsibility and sustainable living. By involving schoolchildren, volunteers, and urban residents, NCS ensures wide participation and long-term stewardship. These green lungs reduce carbon emissions, support urban wildlife, and improve mental well-being; making cities more breathable and balanced. Through strategic collaboration and strong community roots, the urban forestry program becomes a living solution to climate and lifestyle stress in densely populated areas.

Water Body Restoration

National Civil Society (NCS) undertakes water body restoration programs aimed at reviving neglected ponds, lakes, and wetlands across urban and rural India. These efforts combat water scarcity, recharge groundwater, and restore lost ecosystems. Restoration involves desilting, cleaning, native plant reintroduction, and building eco-friendly bunds. NCS works with local government bodies, environmental groups, and resident associations to revive water bodies that have become dumping grounds or dried up due to neglect. The program includes community education on waste management and sustainable water use to prevent re-pollution. Restored water bodies not only enhance biodiversity and reduce urban flooding but also reconnect communities with natural spaces. This initiative directly supports climate action, urban resilience, and ecological balance, in line with India’s water conservation goals and SDG priorities.
